Introducing Slate Digital FG-Dynamics, A Plugin That Emulates the Channel Dynamics of A Classic Desk
FG-Dynamics by Slate Digital is a new plugin that emulates the dynamics section from an SSL 4K-series analog console. It emulates channel dynamics with compressor and expander/gate sections.
FG-Dynamics adjusts makeup gain automatically. This means you can hear your changes each time. Control settings on the compressor include Threshold, Ratio, and Release, as well as Hard Knee and Fast Attack switches. FG-Dynamics is not designed to be a surgical plugin, but it’s a punchy compressor that’s quick to learn and easy to use, reports Gear News.
The Gate section includes controls such as Range, Threshold, and Release knobs, but it also has a Fast Attack switch and an Expander/Gate switch. This allows us to use FG-Dynamics to tackle tricky transients.
Lastly, the Mix knob allows us to blend the dry and processed signals together. The Out knob gives us control over the output level of the plugin. Slate Digital hasn’t really messed with the original design of the SSL-4K hardware other than the mix knob, but sometimes less is more.
FG-Dynamics is the latest addition for Slate Virtual Mix Rack users. As well as FG-Dynamics, VMR users also have access to the SSL 4K-series console EQ, bus compressor, and analog summing.
FG-Dynamics is on sale for $149. To authorize the plugin you need an iLok USB dongle. FG-Dynamics is also part of the Slate All-Access Pass subscription. If you’re unsure whether this subscription is right for you, a 15-day trial version is available. The plugin is compatible with macOS 10.12 + and Windows 8+ in 64-bit VST, AAX, and AU formats.
