How Does Sample Based Synthesis Work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sampled based synthesis <\/strong>uses rendered audio<\/strong> samples <\/strong>as its sound source<\/strong>. So, a recorded trumpet, fridge door or a fully fleshed drum kit are all starting points!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A great example of a sample-based synthesizer is Kontakt<\/a><\/strong> by Native Instruments<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using a multitude of instruments<\/strong>, synths<\/strong>, and other fun sounds<\/strong>, Kontakt allows you to use a preset sound like a guitar <\/strong>and manipulate how it sounds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This can be done via methods we discussed in our How Do Synthesizers Work<\/a><\/strong> like filters<\/strong>, envelopes<\/strong>, and more – whatever strikes you as the most compelling method, you can do it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As well as the ability to stretch<\/strong>, loop<\/strong>, and pitch shift<\/strong>, what’s amazing about sample based synthesis is that it allows you to take an audio sample ever made<\/strong>, and manipulate it like you would manipulate a waveform <\/strong>in any other method of synthesis<\/strong>! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Does Multi-Sample Mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If this hasn’t tickled your interest enough, there’s one more thing we should mention, and that’s multi-sample<\/strong>. This is what makes the samples sound like real instruments<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might think whoever made your Kontakt piano sample sampled a singular note<\/strong> and pitch-shifted<\/strong> the rest of the notes to replicate the pitch changes you’d hear by scaling up the notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, you’d be wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An example of what they may have done is sampled every five keys<\/strong>, and pitch-shifted<\/strong> the following four notes <\/strong>for every note sampled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is because our ears<\/strong> are so sensitive <\/strong>to timbral changes<\/strong> when sounds are pitched up or down<\/strong>. If the designer of your Kontakt piano were to only record one key and pitch the other 48, your ears would notice the details that aren’t there<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To combat how crazy good our ears are at detecting sound fraud, sound designers use multi-sample methods to capture all of the natural tones<\/strong> of the sound source to create sounds as harmonically rich<\/strong> as the real thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This collection of samples is then arranged in the musical order<\/strong> of how the sounds would be as played on the keyboard, and BOOM! You’ve got a fully sampled piano. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can You Stack Instruments in Sample Based Synthesis?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Imagine FM synthesis<\/a><\/strong> where you channel the frequency<\/strong> of your modulator operator<\/strong> into your carrier frequency <\/strong>to create new, complex, timbres<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By using multiple samples, or “stacking them”, you can merge samples<\/strong> and tones<\/strong>, like adding partials<\/strong> in additive synthesis<\/a><\/strong>, then filter <\/strong>and chisel away sidebands<\/strong> like subtractive synthesis<\/a><\/strong> to create a sound that’s truly new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This allows you to play a whole new sound<\/strong> on your MIDI keyboard<\/a><\/strong> with very little effort<\/strong>! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are Sample Based and Wavetable Synthesis the Same?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sample based synthesis is often confused with wavetable synthesis<\/a><\/strong>, but the two are very different<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wavetable synthesis slices up a sample<\/strong> or waveform <\/strong>into segments (a wavetable<\/strong>) and modulation is needed<\/strong> to access the full spectrum<\/strong> of the original sound<\/strong>. All you hear from an individual wavetable is a repeating signal<\/strong> of that segment, meaning a loss <\/strong>of tonal characteristics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sample based synthesis, however, keeps all tones<\/strong> in place because you’re using a whole sample<\/strong> as it came in the tin – not a repeating segment of it<\/strong>. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
