One not unlike the spectrographs you see in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/top-5-metering-plugins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">metering<\/a><\/strong> plugins such as <strong>SPAN<\/strong> by <strong>Voxengo<\/strong>. <strong>Time<\/strong> on the <strong>X-axis<\/strong> &amp; <strong>frequency<\/strong> on the <strong>Y-axis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now imagine you have a <strong>harmonic soundwave<\/strong> playing through this spectrograph. If you were using <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/define-synthesis-how-does-subtractive-synthesis-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">subtractive synthesis<\/a><\/strong> you&#8217;d use filters, envelopes, and other tools to remove <strong>additional harmonics<\/strong> until you got the sound that you wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Spectral synthesis<\/strong> operates in this realm, but functions differently &#8211; <strong>it functions visually<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spectral synthesis VSTs such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.izotope.com\/en\/products\/iris.html?utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_source=google&amp;utm_campaign=SU_GN_SE_BR_UU_WW_Other-Plugins&amp;utm_content=Iris-iZotope_EM&amp;utm_term=izotope%20iris|e|g|c||443786204119&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwpMOIBhBAEiwAy5M6YKRALSFZBZrakpsZQm0lN-Nyd--ppLVDDmgb0xDTPBFR6u19cefbaxoC6HUQAvD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Iris 2<\/a><\/strong> by <strong>iZotope<\/strong> allow you to <strong>isolate frequency <\/strong>ranges of your choice inside the spectrograph. However, rather than being limited to <strong>waveforms<\/strong>&#8230; you can use recorded <strong>audio samples<\/strong> too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you enjoy the way that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mixxed<\/a><\/strong> snare sample sounds? Wicked, so do we! But to have some fun with it you can load it into Iris 2 and isolate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SEy-dlp7lLo&amp;t=377s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>any<\/strong><\/a> <strong>frequencies you want<\/strong>. REALLY! It&#8217;s that simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can select <strong>any<\/strong> frequency bits and pieces of the spectrograph and only those selected frequency ranges will playback when you press a key. The signal playback is sensitive to pitch too, so the octave your pressed key is in will be represented in the audio that you hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The soundscape possibilities are endless. Think of <strong>any visual pattern<\/strong> that you can draw in the physical realm and then <strong>draw it into your spectral synth<\/strong>. The signal that is outputted is the <strong>frequency morphed<\/strong> representation of your drawing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;re, essentially, creating <strong>boundless filter sweeps <\/strong>without the use of a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/define-synthesis-how-does-subtractive-synthesis-work\/\">filter<\/a><\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Loop functions, LFOs, envelopes, multiple voices<\/strong>&#8230; spectral synthesis allows you to get <strong>hands-on<\/strong> with your <strong>sound design<\/strong> in ways previously unimaginable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You can create sounds that would otherwise be impossible<\/strong>. Now that is awesome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Synthesis Defined<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s a wrap! A full wrap! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We started this journey over a week ago and we&#8217;ve both come so far.
