What is a Vocoder? What Does A Vocoder Do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A vocoder is a unique kind of synthesizer<\/a><\/strong> that manipulates how vocals sound<\/strong>. Think back to FM synthesis<\/a><\/strong> and the relationship between modulators<\/strong> and carriers<\/strong>. Vocoders use a very similar process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you after a robotic sound<\/strong> to spice up your Mixxed<\/a><\/strong> vocal samples<\/strong>? A vocoder is the one! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vocoders Explained<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Vocoders need two sound sources<\/strong>. One is a carrier, and one is a modulator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like in FM synthesis<\/strong>, your carrier <\/strong>is your initial sound source<\/strong>. In this case, it would be a synth that you made by reading our Define Synthesis<\/a><\/strong> series!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And again, your modulator <\/strong>is the sound whose harmonic characteristics manipulate<\/strong> the frequency of the carrier and shape its sound. The modulator would be your vocals or your chosen vocal samples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As well as these two sound sources, vocoders use filters<\/strong> that are adapted to the modulator frequency<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the filters come into the chain, the vocoder analyse <\/strong>your modulator vocals and split your audio<\/strong> into different frequency bands<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

More frequency bands<\/strong> = a more realistic final sound<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the vocoder has analysed the modulator, your audio is recreated and sent through bandpass filters<\/strong> (each frequency band gets its own filter<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the level of each frequency band has been sent as a signal to the filters, the carrier signal<\/strong> is sent through the filters<\/strong> too! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now that the carrier signal has been sent through the filters, the vocoder raises<\/strong> or lowers<\/strong> the level of each individual filter<\/strong> – all depending on the harmonics<\/strong> of your modulator signal<\/strong>! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, the carrier signal<\/strong> is filtered<\/strong> so its harmonic content<\/strong> that does pass through<\/strong> is similar to the harmonic content<\/strong> of the modulator signal<\/strong>… pretty cool, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Use a Vocoder<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you’re looking to get super duper results from your vocoder, it’s best to use a carrier signal<\/strong> that is rich in harmonic content<\/strong> like a saw wave at the very least.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The more harmonic content that you provide your vocoder, the more evident<\/strong> the modulation effects<\/strong> will be. A sine wave or triangle wave won’t bring you an ultra robotic sound as a sawtooth or square wave will!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A handy little tip I’ve learned is to compress your carrier signal<\/strong> before it hits the vocoder, as well as a slight bit<\/strong> of saturation<\/strong>. By limiting the signals’ dynamic range, the effects <\/strong>of the filters <\/strong>will be more evident<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to your voice\/modulator signal, don’t hold back! Pronounce words clearly<\/strong> than you would in an everyday conversation. The harmonic content compared<\/strong> to the carrier signal<\/strong> will be different<\/strong>, so for a distinguishable vocoder effect<\/strong>, it’s important to choose words that contain a lot of vowels<\/strong>, for example. The golden ticket is to focus on the characteristics of your voice<\/strong>. Make it as clear as possible<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vocoder Parameters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bands<\/strong> are the number of frequency bands<\/strong> that the modulator signal is split into<\/strong>. We said before that the more bands there are the more realistic the output will be. 8 – 12 bands<\/strong> will give you a classic vocoder sound, but upping the bands<\/strong> will enable you to get really creative<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frequency range<\/strong> is the upper <\/strong>and lower limits <\/strong>of the carrier signal<\/strong> frequency that’s accepted by the vocoder. For a distinguishable<\/strong> vocoder output signal<\/strong>, raise the upper limit<\/strong> above 5 kHz<\/strong> and see if you like what you hear!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Formant<\/strong>, which may also be referred to as shift<\/strong>, increases <\/strong>or decreases <\/strong>the frequency of the filters<\/strong>. Depending on whether the filters are attenuated <\/strong>or increased<\/strong>, the output will sound brighter or deeper<\/strong>. Some vocoders, however, have a “gender<\/strong>” parameter. This is because formant <\/strong>can manipulate <\/strong>the output <\/strong>to sound like it’s a male or a female voice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unvoiced<\/strong>, or plosives<\/strong>, are a natural part of human speech<\/strong>. They’re produced when we make a consonant <\/strong>(a letter that isn’t a vowel<\/strong>) that needs air to blow<\/strong> through our lips<\/strong>. If you’ve recorded vocals, you’ve dealt with these before. The two culprits who cause problems more than others are “p<\/strong>” & “b<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lots of digital vocoders can find these airy sounds<\/strong> because they cover a specific frequency range<\/strong> as they’re produced from pitched <\/strong>and vibrating vocal cord sounds<\/strong>. With the use of an “Unvoiced<\/strong>” knob, you can mix a noise generator<\/strong> in with your carrier signal <\/strong>so the unpitched transient sounds<\/strong> of unvoiced sounds remain audible <\/strong>in your output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
