What is Parallel Compression? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Parallel compression <\/strong>uses two channels of the same audio signal<\/strong>. One gets compressed <\/strong>while one is left uncompressed<\/strong>. You then blend the two signals<\/strong>, where the uncompressed signal is usually the dominant one<\/strong>. The compressed signal is compressed hard <\/strong>and sits “under” <\/strong>the uncompressed signal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Parallel Compression Used For? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Parallel compression <\/strong>is used to keep all <\/strong>of the dynamics <\/strong>of the sound source <\/strong>but also add more volume<\/strong>, power <\/strong>& depth<\/strong>. This makes parallel compression fantastic to use on drums<\/strong>, vocals and mid-bass<\/strong>! But use this method on anything<\/strong>. Honestly, play around and find out what you can get out of any of your audio channels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your compressed track <\/strong>should feature a lot of compression <\/strong>(6dB or more<\/strong>), with a very fast attack <\/strong>for even transience<\/strong>. This will preserve <\/strong>whatever natural characteristics <\/strong>your drums have, whilst adding machine-like power <\/strong>to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To really bring <\/strong>that power <\/strong>to the front of the stage<\/strong>, add a cheeky little 5-10dB EQ boost <\/strong>in the low <\/strong>and high end<\/strong> of your compressed track. If you want to bring powerful drums to your listener, this is your golden ticket. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Does Serial Compression Work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What is Serial Compression? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Serial compression uses one audio signal <\/strong>with a series of compressors feeding into one after the other<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s use vocals as an example. You may have a vocal bus with a compressor <\/strong>that travels into a mix bus with a compressor<\/strong>, and then a master bus with another compressor<\/strong>. However, another method <\/strong>of serial compression <\/strong>would be to feature multiple compressors <\/strong>on one mixer channel <\/strong>for a specific effect<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Serial Compression Used For? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you’re using serial compression<\/strong>, you need a strategy<\/strong>. I’m talking about using compressors that are doing different things<\/strong>. Variations in ratio<\/strong>, attack and release<\/strong>, threshold<\/strong>…. all of it! Don’t forget to use different compressors too<\/strong>! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One compressor <\/strong>can be used to reduce volume <\/strong>with a high ratio<\/strong>, but then use a slow ratio compressor<\/strong>. Or, of course, vice versa<\/strong>! There are a lot of opportunities for dynamic range control with serial compression, and experimentation is the only way to find the best tones and dynamics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have a live instrument track <\/strong>that has dynamics <\/strong>such as impact and attack <\/strong>that are all over the place <\/strong>due to a sloppy player<\/strong>, don’t fear. Serial compression will allow you to add punch and even dynamics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Does Sidechain Compression Work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What is Sidechain Compression? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sidechain compression uses one audio signal <\/strong>that features a compressor<\/strong>, but that compressor is triggered by a different mixer track <\/strong>– not the track it is on<\/strong>. This means the volume of one audio signal <\/strong>will be dipped automatically by a second source<\/strong>, so the first source can be heard clearly<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Sidechain Compression Used For? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sidechain compression <\/strong>can be used for highlighting kick drums <\/strong>so that they aren’t swallowed by your bass<\/strong>. You can also use it creatively<\/strong>. If you used a Mixxed<\/a><\/strong> drum loop <\/strong>but wanted to feature a one-shot snare <\/strong>on every third snare hit<\/strong>, you can sidechain the one-shot to the loop<\/strong>. This means the loops’ volume will dip <\/strong>for the duration of the one-shot snare <\/strong>(attack and release dependant<\/strong>) and come back up when the one-shot snare is finished playing<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Does Multiband Compression Work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What is Multiband Compression? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Multiband compression <\/strong>is used to dissect an audio signal <\/strong>and affect multiple frequency ranges inside the sound<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have a kick drum <\/strong>that’s got too much high end<\/strong>, almost sounding like a click, simply open up a multiband compressor <\/strong>and reduce the dynamic range of the high end<\/strong>. This will maintain the punch of the kick drum<\/strong>, whilst reducing the unwanted high end sound<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Multiband Compression Used For? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Typically, multiband compression <\/strong>is used on a mixer or master bus <\/strong>to clean up messy low ends <\/strong>or nasty high ends<\/strong>. It’s also used frequently on vocal tracks <\/strong>to reduce harsh frequencies <\/strong>in the 5-10k range<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Does Limiting Work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What is Limiting? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Limiting <\/strong>is the method of setting the threshold <\/strong>that you don’t want your audio to breach<\/strong>, and the compressor won’t let the audio signal go beyond that threshold<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Limiting Used For? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

You can use limiting <\/strong>on individual tracks <\/strong>or your final mix down <\/strong>(before mastering<\/strong>), as well as on your master bus<\/strong>. Limiting allows you to shape the tone of a track or tame transience that are unwanted<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
