What is Phantom Power for Microphones?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Phantom power <\/strong>is what we use to amplify <\/strong>the electrical signal <\/strong>that your condenser mic <\/strong>has converted <\/strong>from an acoustic signal<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Condensers<\/strong> use a capacitor <\/strong>that converts sound waves <\/strong>into electrical current<\/strong>. Sound waves vibrate <\/strong>a diaphragm<\/strong>, which is normally a gold-sputtered mylar (polyester film<\/strong>), that’s stretched in front <\/strong>of a metal plate<\/strong>, which we call the backplate<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the diaphragm vibrates<\/strong>, the distance between <\/strong>the diaphragm <\/strong>and the backplate changes<\/strong>, which changes <\/strong>the capacitance<\/strong> of the mic<\/strong>. This converts <\/strong>the acoustic signal <\/strong>into an electrical one<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Condenser mics <\/strong>need 48V phantom <\/strong>from audio interfaces<\/a><\/strong> power <\/strong>because the electrical signal <\/strong>needs to be amplified <\/strong>before it can leave <\/strong>the mic<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Do We Need Phantom Power?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You & your friends are a budding band and you want to record your first demo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You choose to bag yourself a Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 <\/strong>for an audio interface <\/strong>with enough inputs, a Rode NT1-A<\/strong> microphone <\/strong>for your lead singer<\/strong>, 2 Rode M5’s <\/strong>for your drummers’ hats<\/strong>, as well as 4 Shure SM57′<\/strong>s for their snare <\/strong>and kick drum<\/strong>, as well as your guitarist <\/strong>and bassist<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Out of all of these microphones, 3 <\/strong>of them need phantom power<\/strong>. You’ve bagged yourself the active<\/strong>, dynamic<\/strong>, SM57’s<\/strong> for your loud sound sources <\/strong>such as guitar<\/strong>, bass<\/strong>, kick <\/strong>and snare drums<\/strong>. So, your Rode NT1-A<\/strong>, a large-diaphragm condenser<\/strong>, and two Rode M5’s<\/strong>, small-diaphragm condensers<\/strong>, are your mics <\/strong>that need phantom power<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You’ve noticed that your vocals <\/strong>and hi-hat recording tracks <\/strong>are pretty much non-existent<\/strong>. Your bass<\/strong>, guitar<\/strong>, kick <\/strong>& snare <\/strong>are dominating the mix<\/strong>. Why is that? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer is phantom power<\/strong>. You’ve not pressed that small button that says 48V<\/strong>. This means that your condenser mics <\/strong>have not received <\/strong>enough direct current <\/strong>to convert <\/strong>the acoustic signals <\/strong>of vocals <\/strong>& hi-hats <\/strong>into electrical ones<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be careful with this magic button, though. You need to make sure that your recording isn’t about to start clipping<\/a><\/strong>. Is it time you took a trip into the world of gain staging<\/a><\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Phantom Power 48V?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Phantom power<\/strong>, which is often listed <\/strong>as +48V<\/em> <\/strong>or P4<\/em>8<\/strong>, was discovered by accident <\/strong>in 1966<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neumann GmbH<\/strong>, a professional recording microphone manufacturer, was contracted <\/strong>by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation <\/strong>to supply transistorized microphones <\/strong>(transistors switch or amplify electronic signals<\/strong>) that could run off <\/strong>of their studios<\/strong>\u2019 48V power supply<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With that in mind, phantom power <\/strong>was designed <\/strong>to give microphones power without the use use <\/strong>of external power supplies <\/strong>that were too bulky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phantom power <\/strong>is a way of sending needed DC electrical current <\/strong>through balanced XLR cables<\/strong>. This voltage powers the mic’s diaphragm <\/strong>and its internal amplifier<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When phantom power <\/strong>is switched on <\/strong>via your audio interface<\/a><\/strong>, a direct current <\/strong>is sent through <\/strong>the XLR cable <\/strong>and brings the voltage <\/strong>that powers the microphone <\/strong>and amplifies the electrical signal<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
