7 Steps to Make Epic Basses!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

White Noise Bass Tutorial<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This tutorial corresponds to any wavetable synth<\/a><\/strong>, but we’re using Serum as our default.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1<\/strong>: Load up <\/strong>your VST of choice<\/strong>, load up a basic shapes<\/strong>\/sine wave oscillator <\/strong>and also turn on <\/strong>the noise oscillator<\/strong>. You can use any noise <\/strong>you like the most, but if you’re in Serum <\/strong>we recommend AC Hum<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2<\/strong>: Now bring up <\/strong>your VSTs’ distortion <\/strong>& load the asymmetrical distortion <\/strong>preset. Set the drive to 50%.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 3<\/strong>: This step isn’t necessary <\/strong>at all, but you may like an LP filter <\/strong>to filter your noise oscillator<\/strong>. If you follow this step, we recommend a filter cut <\/strong>off around the 9600Hz mark<\/strong>. This will remove<\/strong> the harshness <\/strong>at the top of the noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now you have the foundation of your sound<\/strong>. However, if you play around on your keyboard <\/strong>you’ll notice the timbre <\/strong>of your noise <\/strong>is better on some keys than others<\/strong>. This is why we recommend following the next steps <\/strong>for an even better result<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before continuing, play<\/strong> or draw <\/strong>a handful of MIDI notes <\/strong>of your new fat noise patch<\/strong>. Play around, or stick them on E1<\/strong> for a timbre <\/strong>that’s guaranteed <\/strong>to be pleasant<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 4<\/strong>: Below <\/strong>your distortion<\/strong> in the VST signal flow<\/strong>, load your EQ<\/strong>. Set the low-frequency q <\/strong>to 40% – 45% <\/strong>and set <\/strong>the low-end frequency <\/strong>to 3200Hz<\/strong>. Attenuate <\/strong>the high-end gain <\/strong>to -2.5dB<\/strong>. Now you’ve made room <\/strong>for a second instance of your VST<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 5<\/strong>: Load up another instance <\/strong>of your VST<\/strong>. For us, it’s Serum<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you wanted to get creative <\/strong>& use an entirely different VST <\/strong>than your original<\/strong>, you can do that too. In your new VST oscillator<\/strong>, load up a square wave<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re new to VSTs<\/strong>, you achieve this <\/strong>by loading up <\/strong>the basic shapes\/sine wave oscillator <\/strong>again and moving <\/strong>the wavetable\/WT Position knob <\/strong>to the right <\/strong>until it lands on a square wave<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 6<\/strong>: Now add distortion <\/strong>to your new VST plugin<\/strong>. It can be a distortion preset of your choice<\/strong>, but we recommend a soft clip <\/strong>for the best results<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 7<\/strong>: Route your second instance <\/strong>of your VST <\/strong>to a Mixer channel <\/strong>in your DAW <\/strong>& load an EQ <\/strong>to the channel<\/strong>. This will give you more dynamic control <\/strong>when compared <\/strong>to a stock VST EQ<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a powerful bass experience<\/strong>, isolate 35Hz – 160Hz<\/strong> inside your EQ<\/strong>. You could be daring and raise the isolated frequencies <\/strong>to 260Hz<\/strong>, but we recommend not doing this <\/strong>unless you’re handy with sidechaining<\/a><\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now follow <\/strong>the notes <\/strong>you made with your noise patch<\/strong>… with your bass patch<\/strong>. The reason we have two separate patches <\/strong>is because we don’t want to be limited <\/strong>to a small number of notes <\/strong>that the noise timbre <\/strong>only sounds good on<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, you have all the freedom <\/strong>in the world for which notes you can paste <\/strong>or play <\/strong>your bass patch on<\/strong>. You just have to follow the notes <\/strong>you play with the noise patch<\/strong>… and you have a powerful white noise bass<\/strong>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
