So whenever you come across a breakdown of a track you love, take the time to watch it with a critical ear and eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Under the Hood of Protect ya Neck.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The video starts with a bit of background on Rza and how the Wu-Tang Clan\u2019s debut came about, followed by speculation on the sampler used in its creation. While RZA is best known for using the Ensoniq ASR-10 sampling workstation, it\u2019s believed that this beat was made using its predecessor, the <strong>EPS 16+<\/strong>. And to keep it real, that\u2019s the sampler used in this beat breakdown video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cats Eye first uncovers the original piano and bass sounds used in the track. These come from Ensoniq\u2019s original essential sound library, that came as part of a 3.5&#8243; floppy disk set. The piano is identified as the Steinway 1, and it\u2019s suspected that the bass comes from the <strong>nylon guitar<\/strong> patch, with the high frequencies filtered out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, we get a full rundown of all the sampled components that make up \u201cProtect Ya Neck,\u201d including details like pitch, filtering, and sample rate settings. Starting with the drums, we learn that RZA sampled a stone-cold soul classic\u2014<strong>Otis Redding\u2019s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/7FXuCkl1kfxwS5icDjTwbM\">Hard to Handle<\/a>.&#8221;<\/strong> Since this was pre-stem separation, we also hear some piano decay in the background, which only adds to the track\u2019s raw character. The drum pattern is beefed up with an added snare from <strong>The Honey Drippers\u2019 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wqbEsS5kFb8&amp;list=RDwqbEsS5kFb8&amp;start_radio=1\">Impeach the President<\/a>\u201d<\/strong> and a layered <strong>808 kick<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/inksplatrecords.co.uk\/cdn\/shop\/files\/56009-Otis-Redding-Hard-To-Handle_1200x1200.jpg?v=1705409639\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The original drum source courtesy of Otis Redding.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Melodically the main sample elements are from the beginning of <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/6k2cegIpd6Nc2WpO6xaSIc\">The Delfonics &#8220;Break your Promise&#8221;<\/a>. This sample is filtered to remove much of the bottom end and then chopped in half. Next up that dissonant squeal sound that adds a dimension of threat to the beat. This is actually a short looped section from The J.Bs song <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/1DVpPAU2rReoyUk5Zfrmox\">The Grunt<\/a>, first made famous by Public Enemy in their classic &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/1JJ8D0KE144weLOGrjqJrb\">Rebel without a pause<\/a>&#8220;. <br><br>With the main elements taken care of Cats Eye then reveals some of the shorter one-shot samples as well as the Kung Fu movie used for the intro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So that&#8217;s 6 different songs sampled in this track as well as some movie samples. Not bad work considering Rza was a relatively new producer in the game. <br><br>Cats Eye has done a number of other beat breakdowns, including one for the classic <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/33ZXjLCpiINn8eQIDYEPTD\">Shook Ones Pt 2<\/a> beat by Mobb Deep.
