{"id":2023,"date":"2021-09-09T08:09:46","date_gmt":"2021-09-09T08:09:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/?p=2023"},"modified":"2022-09-22T11:35:41","modified_gmt":"2022-09-22T11:35:41","slug":"what-is-a-delay-effect-in-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/create.routenote.com\/blog\/what-is-a-delay-effect-in-music\/","title":{"rendered":"What is a Delay Effect in Music?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Delay is a time-based effect where audio is fed into the delay unit or plugin and played back multiple times at a rate set by you, the engineer.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/what-is-reverb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reverb<\/a><\/strong>, the signal is repeated many times in less than 50ms and that&#8217;s why we hear it as one mush of the sound. If the sound source was repeated at a slower rate than 50ms, we would hear it as an echo. And that, my friend, would be a delay effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Does Delay Do?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/how-to-use-reverb-a-beginners-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reverb<\/a><\/strong>, delay creates a sense of depth in our music. We can also use it to add further <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/what-does-timbre-mean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tones<\/a><\/strong>, in a dissimilar way to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/what-is-distortion-in-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">distortion<\/a><\/strong>, and it&#8217;s widely used in many popular genres and electronic music.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In delay, the signal can echo multiple times and we can refeed the delayed signal back into the delay processor again to create more and more feedback. In turn, this creates a gradually delaying echo effect!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Analog to Digital: A History of Delay Circuits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Analog Tape Delay<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in time to the analog days, engineers used tape machines to manually create a delay effect. First happening in the 1950s, engineers used a reel to reel tape recorder with the output plugged into their mixing desk, and the output of the mixing desk plugged into the input of the tape recorder. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The source of the audio was plugged into another input channel of the mixing desk and fed into the aux channel of the tape machine, which relayed the audio back into the mixing desk&#8230; and created tape delay! To control the delayed echo, the engineer could shorten or lengthen the loop of tape and adjusting the read-to-write heads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that they had the technique, next came the dedicated hardware like the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/reverb.com\/uk\/p\/roland-space-echo-re-201?hfid=42860582&amp;utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=1726164661&amp;utm_content=campaignid=1726164661_adgroupid=70264195649_productpartitionid=1259193375025=merchantid=101614899_productid=42860582_keyword=_device=c_adposition=_matchtype=_creative=391637461803&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjw-NaJBhDsARIsAAja6dNUjljCRlDAJ1dUIsoTakDwqSEonYCUNuNwftOUKAj5FgMfRMD5T0saAk61EALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roland RE-201<\/a><\/strong> Space Echo Tape Delay. These hardware units hit the scene, and more or less followed the same process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The original signal is split like in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/what-are-the-different-types-of-compressors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">feedforward compressors<\/a><\/strong>. The original (dry) signal is sent directly to the output of the pedal, and the second (wet) signal is delayed by circuitry and then sent to the output to create the first repetition. A portion of the delayed signal is sent back to the input of the pedal and the process starts again, and again, and again!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Delay-diagram-MIxxed-Blog.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2028 lazyload\" width=\"517\" height=\"130\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/create.routenote.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Delay-diagram-MIxxed-Blog.jpg 619w, https:\/\/create.routenote.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Delay-diagram-MIxxed-Blog-300x76.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto\" \/><figcaption>Basic analog circuit for delay process, Source: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/anasounds.com\/analog-delay-analog-voiced-delay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anasounds<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For further effects, individual processing to any of the repetitions such as filtering could be added to give it a unique characteristic, as well as modulation to further replicate the original tape delay! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BBD Delay<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Along came the 70s (well, 1969 to be exact) and they brought the long road to digital with them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BBD, bucket brigade device, was the first technology developed that allowed for compact delay devices like delay pedals. A BBD is a hardware chip that delays the signal that it receives from an input.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BBD devices aren&#8217;t digital devices because they require external analog processing before the signal enters the BBD circuit. This allows the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/what-is-the-difference-between-analog-and-digital-audio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">solid state<\/a><\/strong> BBD to work with the signal. A compressor and different filters to prevent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/what-is-an-audio-sample-rate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aliasing<\/a><\/strong> are used before the signal enters the BBD, and filtering is again used when the signal leaves the BBD to reconstruct the signal. As well as these filters, an expander is also used to boost the signals&#8217; dynamics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"247\" src=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/BBD-Circuit-Mixxed-Blog-1024x247.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2030 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/create.routenote.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/BBD-Circuit-Mixxed-Blog-1024x247.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/create.routenote.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/BBD-Circuit-Mixxed-Blog-300x72.jpg 300w, https:\/\/create.routenote.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/BBD-Circuit-Mixxed-Blog-768x185.jpg 768w, https:\/\/create.routenote.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/BBD-Circuit-Mixxed-Blog.jpg 1123w\" sizes=\"auto\" \/><figcaption>BBD circuit, Source: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/anasounds.com\/analog-delay-analog-voiced-delay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anasounds<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see in the above diagram, a clock is used to control the delay of the signal, and inside the BBD are multiple switches that control the pathway of the signal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, because BBD devices don&#8217;t use processors with coding that handles all of these delay processes, it&#8217;s argued that these devices are analog and not digital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The famous analogy used to describe the process of a BBD circuit is firefighters transporting water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One firefighter fills up a bucket with water. They then fill up the next firefighters&#8217; bucket, and they, in turn, fill up the next firefighters&#8217; bucket. This process repeats until all firefighters have a full bucket of water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This process will inevitably lead to spillage, and this is also true in BBD circuits. Information gets lost as the signal passes through each gate, and these losses add <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/how-to-minimise-noise-floor-in-audio-recording\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">white noise<\/a><\/strong> to the signal. This noise prevents clean repetitions of the original signal. This chip, however still required external processing &#8211; so it was still an analog process. There is a digital process inside this chip, though! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The digital process is only used to control the delay itself. Again, the signal is split in two and the dry is sent straight to the output and the second signal is sent into the delay chip. The analog processes that occur are much the same as in BBD delays, like filtering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re handy with electronics, this was and is great. With BBD and all other analog hardware, you are free to fully customise what happens. Like DSP chips, the PT2399 use a memory bank to store the sampled audio signal that it will relay as delay! This binary code is controlled by algorithms inside the chip that allows for much more complex effects!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A drawback with digital processing, rather than using <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/how-does-modular-synthesis-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">control voltages<\/a><\/strong> like analog circuitry, is that there will be latency on the original signal and reduced <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/what-is-compression-used-for\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dynamics<\/a><\/strong>. The latency will only ever be marginal if it occurs, and the dynamics can be restored with the proper processing (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/what-are-the-different-types-of-compressors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">upwards compression<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as digital processors in dedicated delay hardware, we also have software that emulates the effect of hardware &#8211; and we call these delay plugins. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking to jump in and start using delay effects right away, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mixxed<\/a><\/strong> has thousands of samples for you to choose from and throw into your delay plugin!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Delay is a time-based effect where audio is fed into the delay unit or plugin and played back multiple times at a rate set by you, the engineer.
