Recently we’ve been exploring the wonderful world of musical interpolation. From understanding exactly what it is and how it differs from sampling (What’s is an interpolation and how does it differ from sampling?<\/em>), to the process of creating your own interpolation (How to make an interpolation of a Sample<\/em>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now it’s time to put everything into context by looking at some classic examples of high-profile interpolations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sugarhill Gang \u2013 Rappers Delight (1979)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Not only is “Rapper’s Delight” widely regarded as the record that introduced hip-hop to a global audience, it also features one of the earliest well-known examples of musical interpolation. Rather than sampling Chic’s “Good Times,” a session band replayed the song’s iconic groove as the backing track for The Sugarhill Gang. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This approach was common during the early days of recorded rap, before drum machines and, later, digital samplers became widely available. Like many records of the era, permission was not initially sought. After the song became a major hit, Chic’s songwriters, Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, challenged the use of their composition. The dispute was ultimately settled out of court, with Rodgers and Edwards receiving songwriting credits and a share of the song’s publishing royalties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slick Rick \u2013 Children’s story<\/em> (1989)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

“Children’s Story” is a classic example of a hip-hop record that, at a time when sampling was prolific, instead choose to use an interpolation. This is particularly interesting because, compared with many interpolations, it makes relatively subtle use of the original composition. Released in 1989, Slick Rick’s self produced track recreates the recognisable bass melody from Bob James’s iconic, and heavily sampled track “Nautilus.” Rather than replaying it as a bassline, however, the melody is transposed into a memorable piano hook that gives the track its distinctive character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike some famous interpolation cases, there was no widely publicised dispute over the use of the composition or any later addition of Bob James as a credited songwriter. Instead, the track demonstrates how producers could creatively reinterpret a recognisable musical idea while avoiding the use of the original master recording. That said, this was 1989, just before the legal landscape surrounding sampling changed dramatically and reshaped the way producers approached the use of existing music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sisq\u00f3 \u2013 Thong Song<\/em> (1999)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

R&B became a hotbed of interpolation throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. Influenced heavily by hip-hop’s sample-driven production style, many R&B producers opted to recreate recognisable musical ideas rather than use the original recordings. One of the best-known examples is Sisq\u00f3’s signature hit, “Thong Song.” Featuring a half-time groove and emotive orchestral arrangement, the track borrows the unmistakable melody of The Beatles’s “Eleanor Rigby.” Rather than lifting the original recording, producers Tim & Bob created a new string arrangement inspired by the composition, making it a textbook example of melodic interpolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Tim & Bob and Sisq\u00f3, this was a smart creative and commercial decision. Clearing a Beatles master recording would likely have been considerably more expensive and complicated than licensing the underlying composition. According to producer Tim Kelley, around 25% of the publishing was ultimately allocated to Lennon and McCartney for the interpolation, with the remaining share going to Sisq\u00f3 and his collaborators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the interpolation story doesn’t stop here. Another part of the song proved to be even more problematic. The lyric “‘Cause she was livin’ la vida loca” references Ricky Martin’s global hit of the same name. Although only a short lyrical phrase, it was argued that it was an interpolation of the composition. And because of this, Martins lawyers threatened legal action proving that borrowing even a smallest element from another song can land you in hot water if it is not cleared. The case was settled out of court for an undisclosed sum and it is thought Ricky Martin now owns a substantial split of the publishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coolio \u2013 Gangsta’s Paradise<\/em> (1995)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Few interpolations are as instantly recognisable as “Gangsta’s Paradise.” Rather than sampling Stevie Wonder’s “Pastime Paradise,” producer Doug Rasheed recreated the song’s distinctive harmonic progression and musical feel with newly recorded instrumentation. What makes this example even more notable is it also borrows and reinterprets elements of the original lyrics, making it both a melodic and lyrical interpolation. While the production takes the composition in a darker, more cinematic direction, the connection to Stevie Wonder’s original is unmistakable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interpolation was fully licensed, with Stevie Wonder approving the use of his composition before the song’s release. According to producer Tim Kelley on the One Song<\/em> podcast, the publishing was split 50\/50, with Stevie Wonder receiving half and the remaining share divided between Coolio and his co-writers. The collaboration proved to be a huge success, with Gangsta’s Paradise<\/em> becoming one of the defining songs of the 1990s. It also demonstrated that a carefully crafted interpolation could transform an existing composition into something entirely new while avoiding the use of the original master recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ariana Grande \u2013 7 Rings (2019)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We end this list with something a little more up to date proving that interpolations are as popular and prolific as ever. Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” is famous for being one of the most expensive examples of interpolation in modern pop music. Rather than sampling the original recording, the song reimagines the unmistakable melody of “My Favourite Things” from The Sound of Music<\/em>, written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. The familiar melody is paired with completely new lyrics, trap style production and a modern vocal delivery, making it another clear example of both melodic and lyrical interpolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The publishing deal behind the song is almost as famous as the record itself. According to reports, Ariana Grande’s team agreed to give 90% of the songwriting royalties to the estates of Rodgers and Hammerstein in exchange for permission to use the composition, leaving just 10% <\/strong>to be shared between Grande and her co-writers. Despite surrendering the vast majority of the publishing, the song became a worldwide smash hit, proving that securing the rights to an interpolation can still make commercial sense when the resulting record is such a success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
