To connect to your computer, and therefore your <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/roland-zentracker-mobile-daw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DAW<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, your synth may have also come with a <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/types-of-cables-and-when-to-use-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MIDI to USB cable<\/a><\/span><\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The power supply cable is self-explanatory, so we\u2019ll let you go and plug that into the wall. If your <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/polyphonic-vs-monophonic-synthesizers-whats-the-difference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">synth<\/a><\/span><\/strong> has a <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/a-beginners-guide-how-do-midi-controllers-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MIDI<\/a><\/span><\/strong> to USB cable, plug the USB side into your PC or MAC and the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/what-is-midi-2-0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MIDI<\/a><\/span><\/strong> side into the dedicated slot in your synth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>USB connection is only for <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/top-5-affordable-midi-keyboards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MIDI<\/a><\/span><\/strong> information. Audio information has its own dedicated connection comprised of the classic \u00bc jack. Go ahead and plug your \u00bc\u201d jack into your interface from your synth!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, other synths only have a MIDI cable connection for both power &amp; connectivity to your audio interface. If you don\u2019t have an audio interface, look into getting yourself a or MIDI hub &#8211; USB adapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/how-does-granular-synthesis-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">synth<\/a><\/span><\/strong> only has a MIDI cable slot, plug your cable into the synth and interface\/adapter!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Record Hardware Synths into <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/beginners-guide-to-ableton-live\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ableton<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Enable inputs and outputs via MIDI panel in preferences<br><br>The \u201cTrack\u201d column determines whether or not the synth sends and recieves MIDI information. Turn this on at both input (top) and output (bottom).<br><br>The \u201cSync\u201d column represents the <strong>overall data<\/strong> of the session (not information of the track inside the session). The \u201cSync\u201d button sets whether Ableton sends this information to the synth so that the hardware can sync its internal arpeggiator to the session. Turn \u201cSync\u201d on at the output.<br><\/li><li>Set \u201c<strong>Monitoring<\/strong>\u201d to \u201c<strong>Auto<\/strong>\u201d on the MIDI track.<br><br>When you set up external hardware, two channels\/tracks become available to you. One channel is for MIDI notes, but the other is for rendered audio.<br><br>To save you time in the future you can group the MIDI and Audio tracks together. You can then drag the group to the Templates folder and save it as a preset.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\"><li>Switch Monitoring to \u201c<strong>In\u201d<\/strong> on your Audio track.<br><br>The difference between <strong>Auto<\/strong> and <strong>In(put)<\/strong> is that, when set to <strong>Auto<\/strong>, it only recieves input after priming the track for recording &#8211; which we haven\u2019t yet done.<br><\/li><li>On your MIDI track, set your Buffer size to 256 samples (roughly 5ms).<br><br>When we record audio, it records in chunks (individual <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/what-is-an-audio-sample-rate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">samples<\/a><\/span><\/strong>). The bigger your Buffer size is, the less likely your audio is to have pops and clicks.<br><br>If you have a bigger Buffer size then latency occurs. Latency is when you play a note but don\u2019t hear corresponding audio for, say, another 3 seconds.<br><br>However, if you have a <strong>really<\/strong> <strong>short <\/strong>buffer size then your computer can\u2019t keep up.<br><br>So find a compromise, but 256 samples usually work pretty well.<br><\/li><li>Now hit the record button and play some notes and revel in your hard work as notes appear on the screen.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"6\"><li>When you\u2019re happy with the flow of your music and all FX in the MIDI channel, right-click on the MIDI track and select \u201cFreeze Audio\u201d.&nbsp;Now you have an audio recording!<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Record Hardware Synths into FL Studio<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In preferences, under MIDI, select \u201cSend Master Sync\u201d so the little dot is green.<br><\/li><li>Still in your preferences, set \u201cPort\u201d to any number you want. This selects a channel of communication between your hardware and software. Make sure you use a different Port number for every piece of hardware you set!<br><br>The final step in your preferences should be to enable your chosen hardware under the <strong>Input<\/strong> section too!<br><\/li><li>The next step is to load up MIDI Out in your channel rack via the plugin picker.<br><\/li><li>In your instance of MIDI Out, set both the Port and Communication channel on the left to whatever you originally set the Port to in your preferences.<br><\/li><li>Now press record and start playing!<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Record Hardware Synths into Logic<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Under MIDI destination, select your synth and then \u201cAll\u201d channels<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Audio input: (relevant input interface)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you&#8217;ve made your track, name it if you want<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Load up your system preferences and head to External MIDI<br><\/li><li>Select \u201cUse External Instrument Instrument Plug-in\u201d<br><\/li><li>Next up on your to-do list is to select your synth under MIDI Destination. When the Channels pop up appears just select \u201cAll\u201d at the top.<br><\/li><li>Under Audio Input, select your synth<br><\/li><li>Now you should see a new track appear in your timeline.
