This has sent an angry ripple around the music industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every five years,<strong> The Copyright Act<\/strong> requires the dedicated <strong>Copyright Royalty Judges<\/strong> to investigate the rates of mechanical royalties paid by streaming platforms to songwriters and <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/how-to-license-your-music-music-publishing-101\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">publishers<\/a><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in 2018, US-based songwriters had a major victory when the <strong>CRB<\/strong> declared that royalty rates for music streaming, as well as other mechanical uses, would increase to 44% between 2018 and 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also stated that songwriters would get a bigger slice of the whole pie with an increase in revenue share that&#8217;s paid to songwriters. This was a significant increase from 10.5% to 15.1% in the same time frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/spotify-and-other-streaming-services-propose-lowest-royalty-rates-in-history-for-songwriters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Music Business Worldwide<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/strong> reported that this ruling was ratified in February 2019 when the <strong>CRB<\/strong> published the final rates and terms for songwriters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>NMPA<\/strong> proposed a fairer model for music publishers and their songwriters, a formula made of four parts which include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>20% percentage of revenue; or<\/li><li>40% of what record labels and artists receive; or<\/li><li>$1.50 per subscriber; or<\/li><li>$0.0015 per play<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this has not come to fruition. <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/producerhive.com\/music-marketing-tips\/streaming-royalties-breakdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Producer Hive<\/span><\/a><\/em><\/strong> created the following infographic to display how much streaming giants pay per play and who gets what percentage in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"711\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Royalty-Rates-711x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3666 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/create.routenote.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Royalty-Rates-711x1024.png 711w, https:\/\/create.routenote.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Royalty-Rates-208x300.png 208w, https:\/\/create.routenote.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Royalty-Rates-768x1106.png 768w, https:\/\/create.routenote.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Royalty-Rates.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto\" \/><figcaption>Royalty share, Source: <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/producerhive.com\/music-marketing-tips\/streaming-royalties-breakdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Producer Hive<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK government recently held an inquiry into the streaming industry. They too are also calling for <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/committee\/378\/digital-culture-media-and-sport-committee\/news\/156593\/mps-call-for-a-complete-reset-of-music-streaming-to-fairly-reward-performers-and-creators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fairer rates of pay<\/a><\/span><\/strong> for both songwriters and performing artists.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Music executives such as David Israelite, CEO of the <strong>National Music Publishers Association<\/strong> (<strong>NMPA<\/strong>), spoke with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/spotify-and-other-streaming-services-propose-lowest-royalty-rates-in-history-for-songwriters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Music Business Worldwide<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/a> about the new royalty rates proposed by the streaming companies. He stated that the new rates \u201cprove how much, or how little, [streaming companies] truly value the creators they rely on,\u201d describing the proposed changes as the \u201clowest royalty rates in history\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Israelite also added that \u201cNot only do they propose rolling back rates and terms to erase all gains over the last 15 years, but they actually are proposing a structure worse than at any point in the history of interactive streaming&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Great songs deserve great royalties.
