Do you know why they&#8217;re important to music?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this third article of our &#8220;Songwriting for Music Producers&#8221; series, we&#8217;re going to give you all of the info you need to write better melodies! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a Melody?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A melody is a series of notes we can be perceive as a single entity. By making use of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/chord-tones-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chord tones and non-chord tones<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, we can excite our music by adding tension with them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>A melody is a series of notes that a listener can perceive as one entity. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Your listener doesn&#8217;t hear a combination of notes. What they do hear is an entity. They distinguish a start and endpoint, and they can remove it from the song and remember it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Makes a Melody?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A melody is monophonic. It has only one voice <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/different-chord-types-and-how-to-play-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">compared to a chord<\/a><\/strong><\/span> that has multiple voices. However, a chord progression can be a melody. More specifically, the top notes of a chord progression are thought to be melodies in their own right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A melody consists of a few elements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Contour<\/li><li>Range<\/li><li>Intervals<\/li><li>Structure<\/li><li>Scale<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-contour-of-a-melody\">The Contour of a Melody<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A strong melody follows a contour (a shape). It ascends, descends, arches or dips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no right or wrong contour. It&#8217;s down to your personal taste and the music you&#8217;re writing. You need to have a contour that ascends and descends, of course, and there&#8217;s no set amount of notes, drops, or leaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to contours, different contours evoke different feelings in people. Rising contours sound uplifting while descending contours create tension. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Melodic Range<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fairly self-explanatory, but if you&#8217;re unfamiliar then the distance between the highest and lowest notes in your melody is your <strong>melodic range<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some melodies can cover 2 octaves or more, but others cover the much smaller ground with less than an octave<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you&#8217;re writing your melody, the melodic range is great to keep in mind because having a wider range will make a melody more difficult for your listener to hum (and therefore remember). A narrow range is much simpler but can still be interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Melodic Intervals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A melody will make use of multiple notes. This means there&#8217;s always at least one melodic interval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, are you going to jump straight from C to G in the C Major scale or will you gradually work your way there by using every note in the scale?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Melodic Structure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Melodies always have structure. You can have multiple sections of your melody swapping in and out, you could have a call and response going on in your melody, etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using Scales to Build a Melody<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most melodies make use of scales. There are numerous types of scales:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Modal Scales:&nbsp;<\/strong>Starting at different points, modal scales make use of both patterns of major and minor scales. Modes are <strong>parallel<\/strong>&nbsp;when they share a tonic pitch. C major and C minor are parallel modes as they share the tonic pitch of C.<\/li><li><strong>Major and minor:<\/strong>&nbsp;makes up the majority of Western music.<\/li><li><strong>Chromatic:&nbsp;<\/strong>Using all all twelve notes in the scale.<\/li><li><strong>Pentatonic Scale:&nbsp;<\/strong>Often used in blues and rock, a pentatonic scale only has 5 notes per octave. Compared to heptatonic&nbsp;scale, which is the scale used in DAW piano roles, whihc has 12 notes.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Going back to our <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/chord-tones-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chord tones and non-chord tones article<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, if you were to play the C Major chord (a major scale) with the notes C, E, and G (the chord tones), you have the notes A, B, D &amp; F left in the scale (the non-chord tones).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"555\" height=\"335\" src=\"https:\/\/mixxed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Chord-Tones-C-Major.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7523 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/create.routenote.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Chord-Tones-C-Major.png 555w, https:\/\/create.routenote.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Chord-Tones-C-Major-300x181.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto\" \/><figcaption>C Major chord made up of the notes C E &amp; G, Source:&nbsp;<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edmprod.com\/advanced-melodies-chord-tones-motifs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EDMProd<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Examples of Melody Types<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Arpeggios<\/strong>&nbsp;(or Arpeggiated Melodies)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>An arpeggiated melody is when we play individual notes one after the other. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Chord Based<\/strong>&nbsp;Melodies<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Chord based melodies are melodies we play with chords.
