Music Giant Quincy Jones Passes Aged 91
Contemporary music is mourning the loss of one of the 20th century’s most important and influential figures. As a highly accomplished trumpeter, bandleader, arranger, composer, record producer, and record label executive, there was not much in the music world that Quincy Jones didn’t touch. His career spanned over seven decades and while big band jazz offered his launch into music he would later go on to influence almost every facet of music and entertainment.
Quincy lived and breathed music with a knowledge so vast and expansive that he could seamlessly bridge genres, cultures, and generations. From his work with Frank Sinatra in the 60’s through to his championing of the so-called “King of Pop” Michael Jackson he seemed to have the magic touch. This touch helped earn Quincy Jones universal respect within the industry, in turn helping to break down race barriers. In 1964 aged just 28 he became the vice-president of Mercury Records making him one of the very first African-American executives of a major US record label. And Quincy wielded his powers effectively advocating for diversity and mentoring countless artists that he believed in.
And more than this, Quincy seemed to be universally loved and embraced by everyone around him. This affection is evident in the 2018 documentary film Quincy where you get unprecedented access to Quincy surrounded by friends and family life.
So, as the world mourns this musical legend, it’s clear we may never witness another of such profound influence. Quincy Jones was a force of nature, a true game-changer, and a cultural icon. A person who has undoubtedly left a mark on all of our lives through his life in music. A life that should surely be celebrated by all.
