The Story Behind Acid House Classic – Higher State of Consciousness
The late 80s in the UK saw the so-called Second Summer of Love: a cultural explosion of raves and hedonism. It also ushered in a revolutionary new form of dance music, the squelching, Roland TB303 inspired sound of Acid House. As the 90’s progressed and dance music began to take over the charts, acid kept bubbling under the surface, eventually erupting in 1995 with one of the genre’s most enduring anthems, Josh Wink’s Higher State of Consciousness.
Like much of the club music of its time, the track’s origins were shrouded in mystery. In the pre-internet era, dance music mainly existed in the grooves of 12-inch singles, brought to life only when superstar DJs dropped them on the dancefloor.
Now, thanks to DJ Mag’s excellent video series where iconic dance anthems are revisited, we can finally pull back the curtain on these seminal tracks. In this episode, Josh Wink himself reveals the backstory to this acid house classic. Hit play below to discover the story behind Higher State of Consciousness.
