Bandcamp bans AI-generated music on its platform
Bandcamp has just unveiled a new policy aimed at supporting genuine, human creativity by keeping AI-generated content off its platform.
The messaging from Bandcamp is clear: music and audio that is generated wholly or in substantial part by AI will no longer be permitted on the platform. This is big news when we have AI music generators that can produce whole tracks at the touch of a button. This policy update applies across uploads, and anything that appears to rely heavily on AI can be flagged by their internal review team. This could lead to content removal if it violates this new policy.
The policy goes on to state that the use of AI tools that aim to impersonate other artists or their style will fall under their existing policies prohibiting impersonation and intellectual property infringement.
The sentiment underscores the core Bandcamp ethos: Independent musicians, connecting directly with audiences with no algorithmic filler.
This is the first and clearest statements we’ve had from a major music platform on the role (or absence) of AI-generated content.
