Knif Audio’s Soma EQ Plugin is a Passive Tube Mastering EQ
Knif Audio has released Soma EQ, a new plugin that emulates the Soma passive tube EQ. Until February 1st, it is exclusively available to Plugin Alliance subscribers.
Tube EQ’s are renowned for their tonal shaping and audio sweetening capabilities. Soma EQ is no different. Knif Audio’s new plugin is designed for mastering purposes with its clean tone and how precise EQ adjustments can be made with it, reports Gear News.
Soma is the first passive tube EQ with “Real Q Adjustment”. This digital plugin is an attempt to overcome some traditional passive EQ shortcomings. Knif Audio has stated that changing the bandwidth control on a conventional passive EQ increases or reduces the amount of boost or cut applied, and this leads to unexpected changes in EQ curves. By using a proprietary Real Q Adjustment design, Knif Audio has addressed this issue.
Despite their wonderful sound, old school passive EQs have their shortcomings as well. Changing the bandwidth control on a conventional passive EQ will cause you to inadvertabtly increase or reduce the amount of boost or cut you are applying, leading to unexpected changes in your EQ curve. The Soma EQ finally solves this problem by adding “Real Q Adjustment”. A first in the world of passive tube EQs, it allows for much more predictability and precision than any other EQ of its type.
Knif Audio
Knif Audio reduced the inherent saturation of tube circuits increase tonal shaping capabilities. But if you do want some saturation, all you have to do is drive the Soma EQ a bit harder…
For its plugin reincarnation, Knif Audio enriched the Soma EQ design with extra features such as the ability to increase or decrease the drive applied at the input and output stages. There are also further mastering tools, such as a Mono Maker, Stereo Width control, and additional options for TMT (the component modeling engine borrowed from brainworx).
Knif Audio Soma EQ will go on sale on February 1st, but it’s already open to Plugin Alliance subscribers. The plugin is available in 64-bit AAX DSP, AAX Native, AU, AAX AudioSuite, VST2, and VST3 formats for computers running Windows 7+ and macOS 10.9+.
