In a press release, Universal Audio announced an asset purchase agreement of Townsend Labs Inc, a software developer and microphone manufacturer, and the company behind the  TEC award-winning Sphere L22 Microphone System.

Using it’s own proprietary microphone modelling technology, the Sphere L22 accurately models a large array of sought-after mic sounds. It gives producers the ability to audition a selection of different mic types and polar patterns, even in post-production.

“The Sphere L22 microphone is the perfect platform for us. With UA’s expertise in modelling vintage audio gear, and Townsend’s industry-leading mic modelling technology, we’re poised to bring customers significant innovations in this fast-growing segment of the pro audio industry.”

Bill Putnam, CEO of Universal Audio.

In the deal, Chris Townsend and Erik Papp, founders of Townsend Labs, will be joining the Universal Audio team to help develop more microphone products under the Universal Audio brand.
